So last Thursday, the next day after we finished our trials, we went for a field trip to Asiatic Centre of Genome Technology Sdn. Bhd. ACGT (aka Adenine Cytosine Guanine Thymine LOL). Ok, I know it’s not funny. Early in the morning we gathered up at the main entrance in college, waiting for Ms. B to tell us which car we gonna sit for the whole journey, cause we were driving there YAY :D
Farm and Raymond has the same pose :O Nice timing Aisya (She was the one who took this.)
Reached our destination within an hour.
Hi Mr. Derrik Khoo / Andrew’s father. Yes, Andrew’s father is the CEO of this company, where he hires professionals to do researches on palm oil for the Genting company. Ok, I didn’t know that Genting is investing on palm oil research.
Had our breakfast there. They were kind enough to buy some bread and cakes for us to munch :)
So after some briefing about the company and stuffs, off we went to the lab for the real lab work :D Btw, this is oil palm DNA extract.
First step is to grind the leaf with liquid nitrogen. The liquid nitrogen (−196 °C) is used to freeze the tissue to become fragile to be a fine powder which increase the surface area of extraction, and the very low temperature prevent DNase activation. (Yea I googled it again LOL. Google is awesome, can’t imagine my life without it.)
The pro vs. Andrew (the noob) == That tells us why we’re still sitting in the class listening to the lectures of teachers LOL. Anyway, it’s his first time shall not blame him HAHA.
Different types of palm oil seeds.
This is the machine which contains tiny burette that can eject liquid of specific amount at very high speed, hence increasing efficiency :D Imagine we are using the big ones, look so unprofessional LOL.
Before we left for the next lab, we had a group photo as a memory :D
That’s all for this post, will be posting the second part soon. Check out my facebook for more funny photos during the visit of the labs :)
